In connection with the global energy of the FIFA World Cup, this exhibition brings together resident artists to explore the many ways we understand home. For some, home is rooted in geography. For others, it lives in people, ritual, memory, language, culture, or the feeling of belonging.
As Kansas City welcomes visitors from across the world, Placemaking invites guests into our home at Zhou B Art Center KC. Through a dynamic range of mediums and perspectives, the exhibition offers a personal and expansive look at the artists who help shape the creative heartbeat of Kansas City.
More than a group exhibition, Placemaking is an invitation to reflect on what we carry, what we inherit, what we build, and how we welcome others into our world.

He walks the rows the way his father did, his hands moving through the field, unhurried. Time is measured in weeks folded into harvest. Far from here, bread will be broken for someone else's nourishment, and he will never know their name. His hands finish coiling the irrigation hose. The field is waiting.
About the Artist:
My practice centers on handworked techniques like embroidery, watercolor, and layered textile applications. I favor visible seams, raw textures, and soft, natural palettes that prioritize crafted over manufactured. I’m interested in how imperfection builds character, emphasizing transformation as an essential part of creation. Beauty, for me, emerges not from flawlessness but from what is broken, repaired, and made anew. These works invite reflective engagement where each piece holds the energy of a moment between, making room for memory, individuality, and connection.

Kiley Miles (b. 1982, Salina, KS) is an Overland Park-based artist whose mixed-media paintings examine compassion, love, and spirituality. Utilizing acrylic and collage, Miles utilizes the form and structure of hand gestures to capture the emotional depth of a comforting touch and the invisible nuances of the spiritual realm. She holds a BFA from Fort Hays State University. Miles has exhibited in local and regional venues throughout the Kansas City metro area; regionally including the Birger Sandzén Memorial Art Gallery.
About the Piece:
This piece represents what "home" means to me in the physical, but also in spirit. I chose a turtle dove as their distinct call brings a soothing and familiar sound to me. I added the hands lifting the water to the dove as a peaceful and giving gesture. Lastly, the water represents many properties and translates to our own actions that can ripple out to others in a beneficial way.

About the Artist:
Kim Alexis Newton is a multidisciplinary textile artist and creative entrepreneur based in Kansas City. Raised around art, Kim’s creative foundation was shaped early through family, storytelling, and traditional quilt making. She is a graduate of Fisk University and earned her MBA from Vanderbilt University before spending more than twenty years building a successful corporate career in product marketing, strategy, and leadership. Kim also runs a commercial Gift Quilt™ company and sits on corporate boards. Today, Kim brings that same intentionality, discipline, and emotional intelligence into her fine art practice. Her work has been featured in notable museum exhibitions and collected by prominent cultural figures and private collectors, including Oprah Winfrey and former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. Originally from California, Kim lives in Kansas City with her husband, Nikki, and their daughter, Piper who is a Junior at Spelman College in Atlanta

My work is rooted in authenticity. An ongoing process of creating from a place that feels honest and deeply personal. When I allow myself to make art without performance or pretense, I feel most at home within myself. In this piece, Insecta, I explore identity through self-portraiture intertwined with insects I collected from my family’s farmhouse. Among them were wasps I discovered tucked inside the window sills, hidden in corners and quietly occupying the space over time. About the Artist:
After a forty-year hiatus from art, Jean McGuire rediscovered her passion through portrait studies, drawn to the challenge of capturing the unique stories behind each person. Her portraits seek to illuminate the emotions and histories of people from times past. The proximity of the ZhouB to the rich musical history of the 18th & Vine jazz district has inspired me to produce a series of paintings focused on the jazz that this area is famous for.

Carolyn Kanter started college as an art major, but due to fear and uncertainty, later changed her major to art history. She eventually earned a master’s degree in city planning and later pursued a degree in jurisprudence out of curiosity. Although law was not fulfilling, art still remained absent from her life. After retiring in 2016, she returned to her art practice, which quickly became a true passion. She continues to work primarily with fabric, has participated in several exhibitions, and recently rented a studio at the Zhou B Art Center, where she is joyfully immersing herself in her creative practice.

Kansas City-based artist Milton Lovell Christian creates evocative oil paintings shaped by a unique blend of rigid technical precision and deeply rooted historical narrative. Raised in Colorado by a Black American World War II veteran Grandfather and his German war-survivor Grandmother, Milton grew up at the literal intersection of profound historical contrast. This early exposure to dual, surviving perspectives instills his work with themes of resilience, memory, and identity. Before committing to the canvas, Milton spent decades mastering art on the human form as a licensed professional tattoo artist. This lifelong creative dedication is balanced by a robust background in technical infrastructure, service, and engineering support. In 2023, Milton translated this lifetime of anatomical discipline and technical acumen into fine art, teaching himself the complex chemistry of oil painting. Now semi-retired from tattooing, Milton works from their studio in Kansas City, Kansas—his home since 2006.

Fredy Jose Gabuardy Montealegre was born in 1989 in Boaco, Nicaragua, and moved to the United States in the early 2000s. In 2006, he was accepted into the New Wore School of the Arts in Miami. He later attended the Kansas City Art Institute on a full scholarship, graduating in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. In his work Fredyexplores the relationship between architecture, materiality, and narrative.

About the Artist:
Francisco Gabuardy was born in Empalme de Boaco, Nicaragua, and immigrated to the United States at age eleven. He studied at the New World School of the Arts in Miami from 2005 to 2009 and later earned a BFA in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2013 on a full scholarship. He currently collaborates with his identical twin, Fredy Gabuardy, on Cadejo at the Zhou B Art Center in Kansas City, an ongoing project that explores their shared Nicaraguan identity through a visual language rooted in beauty, mystery, and meaning.
