About the Artist:

Phyllis Anne, p’anne, (Jenkins), was making art at 4 years old with her artist grandmother. During a career in marriage counseling, she followed her dream and opened a gallery/studio in California. Entering competitions, she achieved national interest in her art. In 2024, she moved her studio to Kansas City. A mixed media artist, her abstract style includes figurative, landscape, pure non-objective and sometime surrealistic work.

About the Piece: Water has always been my go to place for a splash of happiness. When I was little, it was the big bathtub. Later I found solace in the sun at the local swimming pool. Still later, the beach and the ocean drew me to fill the well, to soothe my soul. I think that is true for everyone in some way. This piece is one look at floating 'down under'the surface.

About the Piece: : Crafted in 2020, Happiness Project was inspired by the despair of the times. CoVId and the resulting shut down created a longing for happier times. I realized in order to attain the longed for state, we each had to make a point of finding joy every day. I named this piece Happiness Project to reflect a lesson I carry with me to this day.

Still, the rain washes away disappointment, weariness and offers refreshing new perspectives. It's all in the stories we tell ourselves.

Description: Ernest Hemingway allegedly learned his concise writing style while working for the Kansas City Star. Some of the things he was infamous for were his ‘off the cuff ’remarks asserted into conversations. One can extrapolate the same responses were part of his writing style. This piece is inspired by Hemingway’s writings, his personality, even his life – lived off the cuff (informed by great insights and skill). The ability to create ‘off the cuff ‘is possible because of underlying hard won knowledge and skill that can be forgotten in the act of creating.

Inspired by the ZhouB historic building classrooms, now artist studios, the BlackBoard Jungle series was born. While I was creating the series, I thought about the teens back then experienced the classroom. It was common (once approved by the teacher in the classroom) for teens to scribble their own messages across boards at end of day or week...or especially at the end of a long classroom project. I imagined the “future filmmakers” in those classrooms might have expressed themselves as seen here. Flamboyant, pushing the edges, eager, on the edge of naughty, dedicated to their ‘cause’.

Inspired by the historic ZhouB building classrooms, now artist studios, the BlackBoard Jungle series was born. While I was creating this signature piece of the series, I thought about the process of moving through adolescence, the rite or passage of becoming an adult. Now we can extrapolate that the signature of the teen experience is embedded in the adult narrative - contributing to current day arts, architecture, dance, music. literature, great stories told on stage and in theater. Hidden beneath the clouds of chalk dust lies the teenage spirit, alive, thriving, influencing our lived-in world.

DESCRIPTION:

Inspired by the building that houses my art studio (ZhouB Art Center restored historic school), the BlackBoard Jungle series was born. While creating it, I thought about what teens are like now as then, bursting with energy. Back then it was not uncommon for teens to ‘mess up’ blackboards in off class room hours. I imagined the creative thinkers in those classrooms might have expressed themselves as seen here messing around, making an emblem of a circle with a dot in the middle. That symbol could have been inspired by the same spirit later becoming the symbol of a book “The Creative Act, a Way of Being” by Rick Rubin, widely read by artists and entrepreneurs alike. It’s a thought. . .
