About the Piece: : Biology reuses the same shapes over and over again. How lovely is it to know that even things we can only see with a microscope resemble things we see in our everyday lives? This work plays with swapping some structures out for others: worms/mitochondria, chromosomes/leaves, muscles/trees, cells/animals, etc. There is so much to be learned from looking at things.

About the Piece: Imagine the world inside a cell. Now, imagine the world inside a mitochondrion. This is where you can find ATP synthase, a molecular machine that creates the energy currency that is used in our cells (ATP). This work is a reflection on the multitude of tiny things that are constantly in motion to keep us alive. While it is impossible to fully comprehend the scale of life, color and shape help to depict the chaos that is essential to our continued existence.

Description: Arboreal is a study in the morphology of gland cells from a freshwater planarian. As an artist and a researcher, Mir seeks to understand the patterns of the natural world by making. This piece depicts two gland cells, interlocking and reaching upward (apically) and resemble tree branches reaching toward the sky. The cells have been carefully extracted from the paper they were drawn onto and now float in a glass frame.

As an artist and a biologist, Mol is driven to create by a never-ending curiosity about the natural world. They approach making with a tenderness, making decisions about color and texture, light and pattern. With such a rich world of observation, it is clear how Mol delights in the act of seeing. Common subjects include anatomy, cells, and aquatic organisms, often drawing from photos taken during trips to the aquarium.
