About the Piece:

Nine students from the Boys & Girls Club Nowlin Unit created this art project honoring the legacy of Hiram Young. Born into slavery, Young became a successful entrepreneur who built one of the largest wagon and ox team businesses in the region. His work supported westward expansion through Independence, Missouri, a key gateway along the Lewis and Clark trail. Beyond business, he also contributed to education by helping establish the first school west of the Mississippi River, later named Hiram Young School in his honor. Through this project, students learn that Black history is not only studied, but carried forward through creativity, education, and purpose.
