About the Piece:

“We Shall Overcome” is a reminder that we still hold the same spirit of bravery, resiliency and foresight that our ancestors embodied while seeking liberation through movements such as the Slave Revolts, the Back to Africa Movement, the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party Movement. The field of golden rod symbolizes hope and new beginnings, while the garden hoes the figures hold represent hard work. The figures are adorned with graphically designed patterns of historic photographs and motifs. The collaged textiles serve not only as aesthetic elements, but as vessels of memory and resistance, inspiring viewers to reflect on their own journeys toward freedom.
