About the Artist:
River MaKenzi is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist and organizer. Through abstraction, she channels her internal landscape, translating raw emotions and fleeting moments into vivid visual stories. Her paintings are both a form of personal catharsis and an invitation for others to find their own escape within the layers of color and texture. The artwork becomes not only a reflection of her own journey but a space for the viewer to pause, breathe, and explore their own inner world. MaKenzi is Kansas City based, still in her era of emergence, she has been shown in various gallery and exhibition spaces. Art Mimosas & Pancakes, 2025 St. Louis, MO. Graciously Noticed Art Expo, 2024, St. Louis, MO. Kansas City Public Library, 2024. Under My Skin, 2023, Thornhill Gallery a solo show curated by Avila University. Ode To Blue, 2022, Artists & Craftsman Supply. Looking towards the future, River plans to expand her practice and skills through new painting mediums and tools. She hopes to connect with programs, residences, artists and exhibition spaces beyond the Midwest region to pursue more viewing opportunities for her work.
About the Piece:
Created in 2020 amidst a global pandemic and uprising in civil unrest. This piece is a physical manifestation of the hope MaKenzi has for our world. A world united by a beautiful mosaic of color, shape and culture. The technique used to form acrylic skins into globe-like shape is a draw back to creating something from what others my deem nothing. A practice that both Black and Indigenous communities have lived in for centuries. This painting sculpture is a statement of what could be.
