About the Artist:

Taylar Sanders is a self taught visual artist, painter and muralist based in Kansas City, Missouri. After years of suppressing intense emotions, she began painting as a way to heal and reclaim her voice. Painting became her outlet; a way to express, release and transmute emotions. Much of her work consists of powerful and moving figurative paintings that depict the broad spectrum and complexity of black existence and emotion. Her intention is always to uplift, empower and connect people through her art.

About the Piece:

This painting depicts what it can feel like navigating the world as a highly empathic person. It points out the balance between strength and surrender that is needed to maneuver through intense emotional currents. An empath feels their own emotions intensely and absorbs the emotions of the people around them. This overflow of emotion requires them to learn to ride the wave in order to maintain a state of peace. This painting aims to break down the stereotype of the angry black woman by providing a glimpse into the complexity of her inner emotional world.
