About the Artist:

Amir, Anthony, D’Shawn, Shanese, Amiya, and Vonn’Jaye are student artists from the Boys & Girls Club of the Lee A. Tolbert Unit. Under the guidance of Art Program Partner Deaunte Thomas through the Art with Friends program, they have come together as a dedicated group of young creatives. Working primarily with acrylic paint, these artists use color, symbolism, and storytelling to express their ideas and lived experiences. Their collaborative process emphasizes self-expression, exploration, and confidence-building through art. This body of work reflects their growth as artists and their shared commitment to creativity and community.

About the Piece:

Six students from the Boys & Girls Club of the Lee A. Tolbert Unit created this artwork as a tribute to Black excellence and future possibility. Through their work, they honor four Kansas City pillars “ community activist Alvin Brooks, scientist Dorothy Vaughan, geologist Dr. Rufus Catchings, and visual artist Harold Smith” whose careers reflect paths the students see themselves pursuing. Each piece serves as both a tribute to legacy and a vision forward. The project emphasizes representation, purpose, and the power of seeing oneself reflected in history. Ultimately, this exhibition highlights how young artists are actively shaping the future they aspire to enter.
