About the Artist:

Born and raised in the Kansas City, KS area, I attended high school at Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences. I then graduated in 2014 and attended Kansas State University to graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Minor in Art, concentration in Painting. The majority of my art career has focused around social injustice and conversation collaboration to create inviting environments for people with diverse backgrounds and opinions to come together on mutual grounds. My career background has always revolved around Youth Development through non-profit organizations. The arts and youth development correlated to me in a way that gave direction for creative outlook to engage youth at various levels that helped support social emotional learning and mentoring. I intend to continue in the direction of merging the two for my own non-profit idea called Young Creatives, which is geared towards teens looking for entrepreneurial guidance in their creative niche. While also simultaneously assisting with honing their artistic skills with experienced, well established creatives within the local Kansas City area. As an artist, my goal is to inspire change through my art that is long lasting and changing for the generations to come. The intent is to encourage consistent growth in the tending to our minds and hearts through the unique expressions of art.

About the Piece:

This piece is a reflection of what it could look like to impart generational wisdom that combats generational trauma in light of faith. I believe that generational trauma remains underneath the surface until it is triggered in a certain context. From my personal experience in confronting my trauma, it’s a cycle that will continue until a new truth is rehearsed and believed. And what we’ve now learned can be a new way of teaching the generations to come. The ‘halos’ around each figure represents a mental or spiritual enlightenment that repels darkness. The hands are a representation of the continuous cycle dormant trauma can cause. The rest, naturally, is up for interpretation of the viewer.`
