Reclaiming the Canvas:

A Tribute to 100 Years of Black History Month

Date: February 2026
Time: Evening program
Location: Zhou B Art Center KC, 1801 E 18th Street, Kansas City, MO

Reclaiming the Canvas is a community centered multidisciplinary arts experience honoring the past, celebrating the present, and reimagining the future of Black history through the voices of Kansas City artists. Presented at Zhou B Art Center KC in partnership with The Mellow Soul Group, this program centers local Black artists as storytellers, culture bearers, and visionaries.

Rooted in Kansas City’s rich legacy of jazz, migration, activism, and creative resilience, the program brings together poets, singers, musicians, dancers, and visual artists for an immersive evening where performance and visual expression move together. Music echoes poetry, dance responds to history, and visual art anchors memory, creating a layered and engaging experience throughout the night.

This event is both a celebration and a remembrance. It honors the ancestors and movements that shaped Black history, celebrates contemporary Black creativity and joy, and invites audiences to imagine the next 100 years of Black history as something living, evolving, and still being created.

Built with and by the community, Reclaiming the Canvas invites guests to reflect, connect, and experience Black history not only as the past, but as a present force and future possibility.
